Building a Consistent Workout Routine

Building a Consistent Workout Routine: Tips for Success at RNFCrossFit

I love the new year, but I hate the new year—anyone else? I love the fresh start, the motivation we all ride into January, and how everybody is fired up for their fitness goals. But I also hate how quickly that hype can fizzle out once real life kicks in. Sound familiar? Well, that’s exactly why we’re talking about building a consistent workout routine. Consistency is the glue that holds your fitness journey together long after the New Year’s buzz wears off.

1. Set Manageable Goals

Sure, aiming high is great, but I’ve learned the hard way that manageable goals keep you from burning out. Maybe it’s hitting RNFCrossFit four or five times a week, or improving your squat by 10 pounds over the next month. A smaller, realistic goal is easier to stick with—and you can celebrate those little victories as you go.

2. Pencil It In

I’m big on planning ahead. If it’s not on my calendar, I can easily forget it. This time of year, life can still feel hectic (I’m still trying to recover from the holiday chaos). So, literally schedule your workouts like you would any other important appointment. That way, you’re less likely to bail when things get busy.

3. Mix It Up

Variety helps prevent workout fatigue. Lucky for us, CrossFit is all about varied functional movements! Each WOD challenges you in different ways, keeping both your body and your brain engaged. If you ever feel stuck, talk to our coaches about trying a new progression or skill focus. CrossFit has been working for years, and it still delivers results.

4. Lean on the RNFCrossFit Community

When your motivation dips (and trust me, it dips at times), the community aspect of RNFCrossFit can be your secret weapon. I’ve had days where I’m dragging my feet, but then I see my workout buddies hitting new PRs or conquering their own goals, and suddenly I’m inspired again. We’re a team—use that supportive energy to stay consistent.

5. Track Your Progress

If you don’t track it, how will you know you’re improving? That’s why I love using BTWB to log each WOD. It keeps me honest and shows me how far I’ve come, even if I’m not feeling it that day, week, or sometimes that month. Plus, looking at your past accomplishments can be the nudge you need when you’d rather skip.

6. Be Kind to Yourself

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection. Life happens. You’ll miss a workout here and there, or maybe you’re dealing with an injury or a stressful day at work. The key is to bounce back, not beat yourself up. CrossFit is about longevity, not about one workout, so give yourself some grace when things don’t go exactly as planned.

This also means not putting down your workout. I feel sad for people who say, “But I scaled.” Only about 10% of people shouldn’t have to scale at CrossFit—I have to scale weekly. The question we should ask is, “How was your workout?” not, “How did you compare to someone else?” We can use one another for motivation, but if we start comparing, our journey becomes harder, and we drift away from being a positive community. We don’t want to become a community of negativity and drama.

7. Celebrate the Wins

Finally, remember to pat yourself on the back for every single milestone—whether it’s your first pull-up, a faster mile time, or simply showing up to RNFCrossFit on a day you really didn’t want to. These little wins add up, fueling your motivation to keep going.

Consistency might not be flashy, but it’s the real game-changer. By sticking to a solid routine, you’re setting yourself up for a stronger, healthier, and happier year—no matter what January or the rest of 2025 throws at you.
